Have you used Skype? It's kinda like iChat, but it bridges the gap between Mac and PC a little more, and seems to have a much more international adoption than iChat. One of the reasons I used it was for the conference calling (before I started to listen to TalkShoe). You can make VoIP calls easily through Skype too, which makes international calling easy. Don't speak their language? Maybe emoticons do. Sure there are a ton of simple, basic emoticons in Skype, but there are some great "HIDDEN" emoticons as well.
Why are they hidden? Well, they're not necessarily for basic use (f-bomb icon, mooning). Some are more appropriate for your friends more than the weekly creative briefing with the international client. Some are good to have on hand (drunk, banghead, fubar).
Get Skype!
Here are the originally visible emoticons that come with Skype. There are hidden icons (both animated and static) that you can use if you know the codes to get them, but if you don't, or if you like to click on the image to apply the emoticon, you'll want to reveal these hidden goodies.
Here's how you can get the extra emoticons to appear in the Skype interface on your Mac in a few easy EASY steps.
1. Locate the application in your finder. It's easy enough, click on the icon in the dock and reveal it in the finder.
2. Right click (ctrl-click) to show the Package Contents of the application.
3. Navigate to the Emoticon Resource folder (Contents/Resources/Emoticons).
4. In the Animated Emoticon items, Right Click (ctrl-click) to Show THAT Package Contents folder.
5. At the bottom of the list (usually), or alphabetically, you'll find the PLIST which controls the triggering of these little gems in Skype. You'll want to open this to edit it. You're on a Mac, you can use TEXTEDIT to modify this document. (make sure it's in simpletext, not RTF).

To edit the document? SIMPLE use "find & Replace" as noted above. Find the <true/> values, which in the current version of Skype only define whether or not the "hidden" key is active. Then replace all with <false/>.
Of course you'll need to hit SAVE.
The next time you launch Skype, you'll notice a bunch of new icons ready to go - even if you don't know the shortcut for the animated emoticon.
If you're not into this simple recoding, you can replace your PLIST with one that I've made.
